Yellow: The Power of Persuasion in Film

Robert Cialdini, the renowned social psychologist, has dedicated his career to studying the science of influence and persuasion. His groundbreaking book “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion” has been a staple for marketers, salespeople, and psychologists alike. But persuasion isn’t limited to just marketing and everyday conversations; it’s also an important element in filmmaking.

Enter “Yellow,” a film that showcases the power of persuasion in storytelling. Directed by Nick Cassavetes and released in 2012, “Yellow” features an all-star cast including Sienna Miller, Luke Wilson, Melanie Griffith, Lucy Punch, David Morse, Max Thieriot, Riley Keough and Ray Liotta. The film tells the story of Mary Holmes (Miller), a young woman struggling with addiction and self-destructive behavior after a tragic event in her past.

The story is told through a series of non-linear vignettes that reveal different aspects of Mary’s life. We see her as a child with her dysfunctional family, as a teenager experimenting with drugs and sex, as a waitress at an upscale restaurant trying to make ends meet, and as an adult grappling with loss and addiction.

Throughout the film, we see how Mary’s actions are influenced by those around her. Her mother (Griffith) is manipulative and controlling; her best friend (Punch) encourages her reckless behavior; her boss (Morse) takes advantage of her vulnerability; even strangers on the street have an impact on her decisions.

The power of persuasion is also evident in the filmmaking itself. The cinematography is beautifully shot but often jarring – just like Mary’s life – with quick cuts and shaky handheld cameras. The score by Aaron Zigman reflects Mary’s emotional state with haunting piano melodies punctuated by bursts of frenzied strings.

The acting is another aspect where persuasion plays a significant role. Miller delivers a tour-de-force performance as Mary, conveying the character’s pain and vulnerability with authenticity. The supporting cast is also excellent, with Punch stealing scenes as the outrageous friend and Wilson bringing depth to his performance as Mary’s ex-boyfriend.

But perhaps the most persuasive aspect of “Yellow” is its willingness to take risks. The film doesn’t follow a traditional narrative structure, with jumps in time and tone that may leave some viewers confused or frustrated. However, these risks pay off in a film that is raw, honest, and unafraid to tackle difficult subject matter.

Despite its strengths, “Yellow” wasn’t a box office hit, grossing only $7,000 in its limited release. However, it was praised by critics for its boldness and creativity and has developed a cult following since its release.

The making of “Yellow” was also not without controversy. Cassavetes faced backlash from some crew members who accused him of mistreatment on set. However, the director defended his methods and cited the intense emotional nature of the film as a factor in the tensions on set.

Overall, “Yellow” is a powerful example of how persuasion can be used effectively in filmmaking. By examining the impact of others on our decisions and actions, the film illuminates how our lives are shaped by those around us. Its unconventional storytelling methods may not be for everyone, but for those willing to take the journey with Mary Holmes, “Yellow” will be an unforgettable experience.
