Who Am I: A Movie That Will Leave You Questioning Your Identity

Simon Sinek once said, “If you don’t know your why, then how can you expect to know your who?” and that’s exactly what this film explores. Who Am I is a German action-thriller movie directed by Baran bo Odar, and it premiered on September 25th, 2014. The movie has garnered a lot of attention because of its unique storyline, brilliant acting, and ingenious plot twists that will leave you at the edge of your seat.

The film revolves around a group of young hackers who are invited to join a secret hacking group called CLAY (Clowns Laughing At You). The story follows the protagonist, Benjamin Engell (Tom Schilling), who goes by the alias Benjamin the Clown. He and his team spend their days committing cybercrimes such as hacking government databases to expose corruption.

However, things take an unexpected turn when they hack into a Swiss bank’s database to steal millions. After successfully stealing from the bank, they find themselves being chased by both the police and their very own hacker group members.

Throughout the movie, we see Benjamin struggling to figure out who he truly is. He questions his identity and beliefs as he tries to escape from danger and betrayal while still trying to uncover the truth behind CLAY. This struggle is showcased brilliantly in Tom Schilling’s performance as he portrays Benjamin’s vulnerability with ease.

One famous quote from the movie that sums up its theme quite well is “To be anonymous is to be fearless”. This quote highlights how people feel empowered when they feel like no one knows their true identity. However, this anonymity also makes them vulnerable as they can’t trust anyone with their real selves.

The film features an ensemble cast with some of Germany’s biggest stars such as Elyas M’Barek (Max), Hannah Herzsprung (Marie), and Antoine Monot Jr. (Paul). Each actor perfectly portrays their respective character, bringing them to life with their unique performances.

Who Am I was shot on location in Berlin, Germany, showcasing some of the city’s most iconic landmarks such as Alexanderplatz, the Reichstag Building, and Brandenburg Gate. The cinematography by Nikolaus Summerer is exceptional, adding an extra layer of depth to the film.

The film has received critical acclaim for its gripping plot and unique storytelling. It has won several awards including the Audience Award at the Zurich Film Festival and Best Film at the German Film Critics Association Awards in 2015.

The movie’s popularity soared internationally after it was released on Netflix in 2016. The streaming giant recognized its potential and added it to their growing list of foreign films that have since been widely popular amongst viewers around the world.

The film’s special effects and editing are also noteworthy. One scene that stands out is when Benjamin drives a car through a shopping mall while being chased by police. It’s one of those scenes that sticks with you long after you’ve finished watching it because of how seamlessly it was executed.

Overall, Who Am I is a must-watch movie for anyone who loves action-thriller films with a unique twist. Its superb cast, thrilling storyline, and impeccable cinematography make this film one of the best in its genre. It’s one of those rare movies that leave you questioning your own identity and beliefs long after you’ve turned off your screen.
