Review

Mark Twain, the beloved American author, once said, “The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d rather not.” Now, while that may have been sound advice in his time, it certainly doesn’t apply to the characters in the 1983 comedy film “The Survivors.”

Starring Robin Williams and Walter Matthau, this film tells the story of two everyday guys who find themselves caught up in a dangerous situation they never saw coming. The film was directed by Michael Ritchie and written by Michael Leeson.

The plot of “The Survivors” revolves around two men named Donald Quinelle (Williams) and Sonny Paluso (Matthau). After losing their jobs on the same day, they decide to go on a camping trip together to clear their heads. However, things take a turn for the worse when they witness a murder and find themselves being pursued by the killer.

As one would expect from a film starring Williams and Matthau, there are plenty of comedic moments throughout. Their chemistry as an odd couple is delightful to watch as they navigate their way through this unpredictable situation. Their bickering back-and-forth feels natural and adds to the overall sense of humor.

Williams shines in his role as Quinelle. His character is quirky and unorthodox but ultimately lovable. He has a knack for getting himself into trouble but always manages to come out on top in the end.

Matthau’s performance as Paluso is equally impressive. His character is stubborn and gruff yet has a soft side that shines through in certain scenes. When he’s not arguing with Quinelle or trying to fend off danger, he’s able to show off his comedic timing with ease.

The supporting cast includes actors like Jerry Reed, James Wainwright, Anne Pitoniak, and Kristen Vigard. They all deliver solid performances, but the film truly belongs to Williams and Matthau.

The film’s score by Paul Chihara perfectly captures the mood of each scene. The music is upbeat during comedic moments and tense when danger is near. The theme song “That’s What Friends Are For” by Rod Stewart adds a nice touch to the film as well.

While “The Survivors” may not have been a huge commercial success upon its release, it has since gained a small cult following. Fans of Williams and Matthau will undoubtedly enjoy their performances in this film.

Filming took place in New York City and New Jersey. The scenes in which Quinelle and Paluso are being pursued through the woods were shot on location in California’s Humboldt County.

Critics were mixed on their opinion of “The Survivors.” While some praised the comedic performances of Williams and Matthau, others felt that the film was too disjointed and lacked a cohesive plot.

Despite any criticisms it may have received, “The Survivors” is still an enjoyable comedy with two of Hollywood’s greatest actors at its center. Fans of classic ’80s films will certainly appreciate this hidden gem.

In conclusion, “The Survivors” may not have been a box office smash or an award-winning masterpiece, but it still holds up as a fun and entertaining movie nearly 40 years later. Mark Twain would surely approve of the humor in this film, as it provides a much-needed escape from the real world – even if just for 102 minutes.
