Review
Act I, Scene I
Enter the stage, Steve Jobs. He is dressed in his usual turtleneck and jeans, looking tense and determined.
Steve Jobs: “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears! I come to tell you of a tale that will shake the very foundations of our world. A tale of innovation, genius and ambition – the story of my life.”
The audience is captivated by Steve Jobs’ commanding presence. They lean forward in their seats, eager to hear more.
Steve Jobs: “I was born in San Francisco in 1955. My adoptive parents raised me in Mountain View, California – the heart of Silicon Valley. From a young age, I had a passion for technology and design. My mind was always buzzing with ideas.”
Act I, Scene II
The scene shifts to the garage where Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak are tinkering with electronics.
Steve Wozniak: “Hey Steve, check out this new computer chip I made!”
Steve Jobs: “Wow Woz! This could change everything. Let’s start our own company and make history.”
Act II, Scene I
The stage lights up to reveal Apple’s first ever product launch event. Steve Jobs is standing on stage holding up the Macintosh computer.
Steve Jobs: “This machine is not just a computer – it’s a work of art. It has the power to revolutionize the way we work and live. It’s more than just a tool – it’s an extension of ourselves.”
The audience erupts into applause as Steve unveils his creation.
Act III, Scene III
The scene shifts to backstage at an Apple event where Steve is arguing with John Sculley.
John Sculley: “I’m sorry Steve but we can’t keep making these expensive products that only appeal to a niche market. We need to think about profits and market share.”
Steve Jobs: “You don’t understand John. We’re not just selling products – we’re selling a lifestyle. Apple is about creativity, innovation and thinking different. If we lose sight of that, we lose everything.”
Act IV, Scene II
The stage lights up to reveal Steve on stage at another Apple event.
Steve Jobs: “We’ve done it again! The iPod is the ultimate music player – sleek, portable and easy to use. It’s a game-changer.”
The audience cheers as Steve holds up the iconic white device.
Act V, Scene I
The final scene shows Steve on his deathbed surrounded by his loved ones.
Steve Jobs: “I may not have been perfect, but I did my best to change the world for the better. I hope that my legacy will live on through Apple and future generations of innovators.”
Curtain falls.
Despite the hype surrounding the film adaptation of Steve Jobs’ life story in 2015, it went down in cinematic history as a box office dud. Directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting), written by Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) and with Michael Fassbender playing the titular role of Jobs himself – it seemed like a surefire hit. So what went wrong?
Critics were divided over whether it was a masterpiece or a disaster: some praised its innovative structure (the film was divided into three acts, each focusing on a different product launch event in Steve’s career), while others found it pretentious and self-indulgent.
One thing that everyone agreed on was that Michael Fassbender gave an electrifying performance as Steve Jobs. He captured both his charisma and his flaws perfectly, making him seem both larger-than-life and incredibly human.
Despite this, the film struggled to find an audience – perhaps due to its unconventional structure or because audiences felt that they already knew everything there was to know about Steve Jobs’ life. It’s a shame, because it really is a beautifully crafted film that deserves more recognition.
Whether you’re a die-hard Apple fan or just interested in the story of one of the most influential figures of our time, Steve Jobs is definitely worth a watch. Who knows – it might even inspire you to think different.
