Review

As a self-proclaimed movie buff, I am always on the lookout for films that not only entertain but also educate and encourage introspection. My latest discovery is “Son of the South,” a movie that delivers on all fronts. Directed by Barry Alexander Brown, who co-wrote the screenplay with Bob Zellner, the film explores one man’s journey from a white supremacist background to becoming an active participant in the civil rights movement.

Based on Zellner’s memoir “The Wrong Side of Murder Creek,” the story follows young Bob (played by Lucas Till), whose grandfather was in the Ku Klux Klan and whose father was a staunch supporter of segregation. Despite this upbringing, Bob becomes involved with civil rights activists and ultimately decides to stand up against racism and bigotry.

The movie is set in Alabama during the 1960s, when racial tensions were at an all-time high. The scenes are vividly portrayed, from the segregated buses and restaurants to the violent clashes between protesters and police officers. As someone born long after these events took place, it was shocking to see just how extreme people’s opinions on race could be.

What makes “Son of the South” truly stand out is its ability to humanize both sides of this complex issue. While we see firsthand how damaging racism can be, we also gain insight into why some people held such hate-filled beliefs. For instance, Bob’s father (played by Lex Scott Davis) genuinely believes that he is doing what is best for his family and community by maintaining segregation. This nuance adds depth to each character and makes them feel like real people rather than caricatures.

The acting in this movie is top-notch across the board. Till portrays Bob with sensitivity and nuance, capturing both his naivete as well as his determination to do what is right. Cedric The Entertainer delivers a powerful performance as Reverend Ralph Abernathy, while Brian Dennehy (in his final film appearance) shines as a retired judge who offers Bob guidance and support.

The score of the movie is also noteworthy, with the music perfectly capturing the mood of each scene. There are moments of quiet contemplation as well as high-energy protest scenes, each accompanied by fitting music that enhances the emotional impact.

Despite its serious subject matter, there are moments of levity throughout “Son of the South.” These lighter scenes help to balance out the heaviness of some of the more violent and intense moments. For instance, there is a hilarious exchange between Bob and his grandmother (played by Sharonne Lanier) about her cooking that had me laughing out loud.

Ultimately, “Son of the South” is a powerful reminder of how far we have come as a society in terms of racial equality while also highlighting how far we still have to go. It is a must-see for anyone interested in civil rights history or simply looking for an engaging and thought-provoking film.

In terms of critical reception, “Son of the South” has been well-received by audiences and critics alike. At the time of writing, it holds an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 47 reviews. The consensus reads: “Driven by a compelling true story and boosted by strong performances from its cast, Son Of The South offers an absorbing look at one man’s journey toward becoming on anti-racism activist.”

The movie was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor at both the NAACP Image Awards (for Cedric The Entertainer’s performance) and at the Critics Choice Super Awards (for Dennehy’s role).

Overall, I cannot recommend “Son of the South” enough. It is a timely reminder that even small acts can make a big difference when it comes to standing up against hate. As Reverend Abernathy says in one key scene: “Change doesn’t happen with big moments. It happens with the courage to take a small step forward.”
